Description

Biotopo Tropical Isopod Substrate is a specialized, ready-to-use soil mix for keeping and breeding tropical Isopods. The mixture of organic soil, leaves, bark, small twigs, and a nutritional supplement not only provides a suitable substrate but also creates a natural environment where your woodlice can burrow, hide, and forage for food. You no longer need to mix separate base materials and can immediately set up a breeding tank or bioactive terrarium.

Biotopo Tropical Isopod Substrate for special species

Keeping tropical isopods has evolved into a specialized terrarium hobby. In addition to species used as cleanup crews, more and more isopods are being kept for their unique colors, patterns, and behavior. Think of popular Cubaris varieties such as the Panda King, Rubber Ducky, Red Pak Chong, and White Shark, but also Merulanella, Troglodillo, and the tropical dwarf isopod Trichorhina tomentosa.

These species do not simply live on the substrate. They burrow into it, use it as shelter, and search for food among the organic material. A good substrate is therefore much more than just moist soil. The substrate is at the heart of woodlouse breeding and directly influences the available shelter, moisture content, and natural food supply.

Natural ingredients for a living substrate

Biotopo combines organic soil with leaves, bark, and small pieces of twigs. These ingredients give the substrate a varied structure that mimics the natural litter layer where many woodlice live.

Leaves and woody material provide foraging sites and are gradually broken down by Isopods and microorganisms. Bark and twigs provide structure, small openings, and sheltered areas. The organic soil forms a moisture-retaining base in which animals can burrow and young woodlice can take refuge.

A dietary supplement for Isopods has also been added to the mix. This makes the substrate more nutritious than a simple base consisting only of soil or coconut fiber. However, leaf litter remains an important part of their diet. Therefore, regularly replenish the top layer with suitable dried leaves.

Moist and drier areas for Cubaris and other woodlice

Many tropical Cubaris species prefer a relatively moist environment, but they, too, need to be able to choose between moist and slightly drier areas. Completely waterlogged substrate can lead to oxygen-deprived conditions, while a completely dried-out enclosure can cause problems during molting.

Therefore, always create a moisture gradient. Keep one part of the enclosure evenly moist and let the other part become slightly drier. The Isopods can then choose the area that best suits their needs at that moment.

The Biotopo Tropical Isopod Substrate retains moisture without requiring you to keep the entire breeding tank constantly wet. The combination of fine soil and coarser natural components helps keep the substrate loose and well-aerated. Always ensure adequate ventilation and adjust the humidity to suit the species you are keeping.

For breeding tanks and bioactive terrariums

You can use the substrate as a base for specialized Isopod breeding, but also as a nutritious habitat in a bioactive terrarium. Tropical dwarf Isopod such as Trichorhina tomentosa are commonly used as part of the cleanup crew in enclosures housing, for example, poison dart frogs and small geckos.

Larger and more vividly colored species of Cubaris, Merulanella, and Troglodillo are usually kept in a separate rearing tank. This allows you to adjust the temperature, ventilation, diet, and humidity more precisely to the specific species and to better monitor the colony’s development.

Various species of Porcellio, Porcellionides, and Armadillidium can also be kept on this substrate mix, provided that the humidity and setup are adapted to their natural living conditions.

Instructions for Use

:
Spread a layer of Biotopo Tropical Isopod Substrate approximately 5 to 8 centimeters thick. Moisten one side evenly and keep the other side slightly drier. Place pieces of cork bark or wood on the bottom and cover a large portion of the surface with suitable dried leaves. This creates dark hiding spots and additional feeding areas.

Check the moisture level regularly and be sure to moisten the damp side before it dries out completely. Prevent the substrate from becoming waterlogged and ensure adequate ventilation. In addition to the provided nutritional supplement, always offer a suitable source of calcium, such as cuttlebone. Provide extra food in small amounts and remove any leftovers if they spoil or become excessively moldy.

Replenish leaves and woody material as the colony processes them. Do not unnecessarily replace the entire substrate, as young woodlice and beneficial microorganisms may be found deep within it. Instead, gradually replace a portion with Biotopo Tropical Isopod Substrate when the structure has broken down significantly.
