ShroomRoom Moss Starter Kit – MossMix & MossBase
The ShroomRoom Moss Starter Kit – MossMix & MossBase is a complete starter system for growing natural moss in a humid terrarium or paludarium. The kit combines two products, each with its own function. MossBase forms a moisture-retaining substrate onto which the moss material can be applied, while MossMix adds various types of moss material and moss spores. This means you don’t have to gather different ingredients yourself and can start applying a natural layer of moss right away.
ShroomRoom Moss Starter Kit for a natural moss wall
A moss-covered back wall gives a tropical terrarium more depth and a more natural look. Moss softens harsh transitions between the back wall, wood, cork, and stones, and helps new structures blend visually into the landscape.
With this complete starter kit, you can apply the moss mixture precisely to the areas where you want vegetation to grow. Examples include the back wall of a terrarium, pieces of cork bark, wood, tree fern fibers, planting beds, and other rough, moisture-retaining surfaces.
This kit was designed for terrarium enthusiasts who want to grow their own moss rather than using ready-made moss mats. This allows the moss to gradually adapt to the surface and conditions in your terrarium.
The difference between MossMix and MossBase
MossMix and MossBase complement each other, but do not serve the same purpose. MossMix contains a varied blend of moss material and spores. Sphagnum has been deliberately omitted so that the mix remains focused on the development of finer moss growth.
MossBase forms the foundation of the system. After adding approximately 80 milliliters of water, a spreadable, moisture-retaining mixture is created. This base helps keep MossMix in place and prevents the fine material from falling off vertical or sloped surfaces immediately.
By using both products together, you create a better starting point than if you were to spread dry moss material directly onto a smooth or quickly drying substrate. MossBase helps retain moisture, while MossMix provides the biological starting material for moss growth.
Growing Moss in a Tropical Terrarium
For healthy growth, humidity, light, temperature, and patience are especially important. Keep the moss mixture consistently slightly moist, but avoid constantly washing it away with a strong stream of water. A fine mist is better than direct spraying.
The best results are generally achieved at a relative humidity of about 70 to 80 percent and a temperature around 25 °C. Also, ensure there is sufficient natural light or appropriate terrarium lighting. Moss needs light to grow, but bright light combined with drying out can damage the surface.
Ventilation is also important. A humid terrarium does not need to be completely sealed. A slight breeze helps prevent stagnant, oppressively damp conditions. The exact growth rate can vary depending on temperature, light intensity, water quality, humidity, and the surface area used.
For backdrops, wood, and natural elements
The ShroomRoom Moss Starter Kit – MossMix & MossBase can be applied to various moisture-retaining materials. Rough terrarium backdrops, cork, wood, and tree fern fibers generally provide better adhesion than smooth plastic or glass.
You don’t have to cover an entire wall right away. By applying the mixture in specific spots—in cracks, depressions, along tree roots, and around planting beds—you’ll achieve a more varied and natural look. Combine small areas of vegetation with leaf litter, wood, climbing plants, and ferns to mimic the look of a tropical forest floor.
With a standard application thickness, the contents are sufficient for approximately 0.6 m². The actual coverage depends on the texture of the surface and the thickness at which you apply the mixture.

User manual
Pour the entire contents of MossBase into a clean mixing cup and gradually add approximately 80 milliliters of clean water. Mix until a uniform, spreadable base is formed. Then add MossMix and carefully distribute the moss material through the prepared base.
Lightly dampen the desired surface beforehand. Apply the mixture in a thin, even layer and gently press it against the surface. A layer that is too thick may not adhere as well and may remain wet for an unnecessarily long time.
Regularly mist the treated surface with a fine spray. Keep the mixture moist. Preferably use rainwater, reverse-osmosis water, or other low-mineral water to minimize the buildup of lime and salts.
Give the moss time to develop. The initial changes may be subtle, and the rate of growth varies by terrarium. With stable humidity, appropriate lighting, adequate ventilation, and regular fine misting, you’ll create the best conditions for a naturally overgrown result.
