Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp – UVB and heat in one lamp
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp is a powerful UVB heat lamp for reptiles that combines heat, UVB, UVA, and visible daylight in a single light source. This second-generation mercury vapor lamp is designed to create a natural basking spot where reptiles can warm up while benefiting from ultraviolet radiation.
In their natural habitats, many diurnal reptiles receive heat and UV radiation at the same time. While basking in the sun, they raise their body temperature and are exposed to UVB, which is important for the production of vitamin D3.
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp combines these features. The lamp produces a targeted combination of light, heat, and UV radiation, creating a clearly defined basking zone.
The improved second-generation model offers powerful UV output, a focused beam, and integrated ballast technology. This eliminates the need for a separate external ballast.
The lamp is available in 80, 100, and 160 watts, so you can choose a model that matches the dimensions of the terrarium and the needs of the species you’re keeping.
UVB lighting supports vitamin D3 and calcium metabolism
One of the most important features of the Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp is its production of UVB radiation.
For many reptiles, UVB is necessary for the production of vitamin D3 in the skin. Vitamin D3 plays an important role in the absorption and utilization of calcium, which is essential for the development and maintenance of healthy bones.
A prolonged lack of adequate UVB lighting, combined with an insufficient calcium intake, can contribute to metabolic bone disease.
The Arcadia UV Basking Lamp combines UVB with a warm basking spot. This allows a reptile to receive both heat and UV radiation while basking.
The appropriate UVB intensity varies by animal species. Therefore, it is important to carefully adjust the distance from the lamp and the UV index to suit the animal.
UVA, visible daylight and infrared heat
In addition to UVB, the Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp also produces UVA radiation, visible light, and infrared heat.
UVA is part of the natural solar spectrum and can play a role in color perception and behavior in many reptiles.
Visible light helps create a recognizable basking spot, while infrared radiation helps warm the animal and the basking area.
Reptiles are ectothermic animals. They use external heat sources to regulate their body temperature and regularly seek out sunny spots in nature.
By providing heat and UV radiation in the same location, a basking spot is created that aligns with this natural behavior.
Improved second generation UV Basking Lamp
The second generation Arcadia UV Basking Lamp was developed as an improved version of the original D3 mercury vapor lamp.
Arcadia designed this generation with improved heat and light output and enhanced UVA and UVB performance. The distribution of UVB across the basking zone has also been improved.
The lamp uses mercury vapor technology and features a built-in ballast. This allows the lamp to be connected to a compatible fixture with a ceramic E27 socket without the need for a separate external ballast.
This combination makes the Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp an attractive option for terrarium owners who want to combine a powerful heat source and UVB lighting in a single basking spot.
Available in 80, 100, and 160 watts
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp is available in three different wattages.
| Design | Color Temperature | Base | Manufacturer code |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80-watt Mini | 4000 K | E27 | RSMA80E27 |
| 100 watts | 4000 K | E27 | RSMA100E27 |
| 160 watts | 4200 K | E27 | RSMA160E27 |
The 80W Mini is the more compact model in the product line. It may be a good choice for smaller enclosures where there is sufficient distance from the lamp and a suitable UV gradient can be achieved.
The 100W model offers more heating power and is intended for situations where a more powerful basking spot is desired.
The 160W model is particularly suitable for spacious and taller reptile enclosures where sufficient distance from the powerful heat and UV source can be maintained.
The correct wattage is not determined solely by the size of the terrarium. The species of animal, mounting distance, ventilation, and desired UV index are also important.
Targeted basking spot with a beam angle of 35 degrees
According to the manufacturer, the Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp has a beam angle of approximately 35 degrees.
As a result, heat, visible light, and UV radiation are concentrated around a clearly defined basking spot.
For example, you can place the lamp on top of a sturdy solar platform, a rock, or a suitable branch.
For many reptiles, it is important that they not only be able to bask under the lamp, but also easily move to cooler areas with lower UV levels.
An appropriate temperature and UV gradient allows the animal to seek out the conditions it prefers on its own.
UVB heat lamp or separate T5 UVB lighting?
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp combines UVB and heat in a single lamp. This is a key difference from standard heat lamps, such as the Arcadia Solar Basking Spotlight or Halogen Basking Spot.
Those traditional basking lamps are primarily designed to provide heat and visible light. A separate UVB lamp is also required to ensure adequate UVB exposure.
The Arcadia UV Basking Lamp emits UVB on its own, but concentrates the radiation mainly around the basking spot.
A linear T5 UVB lamp, on the other hand, can spread UV radiation over a larger area of the terrarium.
Arcadia therefore recommends considering a suitable linear T5 UVB lamp for enclosures longer than about 60 centimeters. This creates a more extensive UV gradient and allows the reptile to benefit from the lighting in various areas of the enclosure.
Suitable for sun-loving reptiles
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp is particularly suitable for reptiles that naturally seek out warm, UV-rich basking spots.
Consider, for example, bearded dragons, certain agamas, iguanas, and tortoises, depending on their specific care needs.
For larger reptiles, it is important that the basking spot warms a sufficient portion of their body surface. In addition, the enclosure must provide enough space for them to move away from direct heat and UV radiation.
For sensitive, shade-loving, or nocturnal species, a high-intensity UVB mercury vapor lamp may not necessarily be suitable.
The proper lighting must always be tailored to the natural habitat and the UV requirements of the species being kept.
Integrated ballast and E27 socket
The Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp features an integrated ballast system.
As a result, no separate external ballast is required. The lamp can be used in a suitable heat-resistant fixture with a ceramic E27 socket.
Use only a fixture that is suitable for the selected wattage and for the heat generated by a mercury vapor lamp.
A sufficiently large reflector or lamp holder helps to safely dissipate the heat.
Always check the manufacturer’s installation instructions before using the lamp.
Not dimmable and not suitable for thermostat control
It is important to note that the Arcadia 2nd Generation UV Basking Lamp is not suitable for use with a dimmer or a thermostat that regulates the electrical power supply.
Mercury vapor lamps require a stable power supply to function properly. Dimming or regularly interrupting the power supply can affect the lamp’s performance and lifespan.
The correct temperature and UV intensity must therefore be achieved by selecting the appropriate wattage, mounting height, and terrarium setup.
For any additional temperature control, use a separate heat source with a suitable thermostat.
