Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 Lamp 14 Watt – natural UVB lighting for snakes and reptiles

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 Lamp 14 Watt has been specially developed for reptiles that naturally inhabit shaded environments and do not require extremely high UVB intensity.

Many snakes and other reptiles spend a large part of the day among plants, under branches, or in hiding places. Nevertheless, these animals can regularly benefit from sunlight and UV radiation.

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max makes it possible to create a suitable UV zone in the terrarium, allowing the animal to choose for itself when to expose itself to the light.

With a UVB percentage of 2.5%, a power rating of 14 watts, and a length of approximately 55 centimeters, this lamp provides broad light distribution.

This makes the ShadeDweller Max particularly suitable for larger terrariums and reptile species that like to bask with a larger portion of their bodies within a moderate UV zone.

Specially designed for hoses

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max was developed by Arcadia with special attention to snakes’ natural UV needs.

Although snakes are often considered animals that require little UVB, many species do indeed make use of sunlight in the wild.

Some snakes actively bask in the sun, while other species are exposed to UV radiation partly from within a hiding place.

The ShadeDweller Max is suitable for terrariums containing, among other things:

  • King pythons
  • Corn snakes and king snakes
  • Milk snakes
  • Rat snakes
  • Hook-nosed snakes
  • Garter snakes
  • Boas
  • Other suitable snake species

This lamp may also be of interest for certain lizards and amphibians with low UV requirements.

The appropriate UVB intensity varies by animal species. Therefore, the mounting distance, reflector, and available shaded areas must always be tailored to the animal’s needs.

2.5% UVB supports the natural production of vitamin D3

UVB radiation plays an important role in the natural production of vitamin D3 in many reptiles.

Vitamin D3 supports the absorption and utilization of calcium and thus contributes to normal bone development and muscle function.

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max produces 2.5% UVB within the total light spectrum.

This relatively low percentage was chosen deliberately.

The 14-watt ShadeDweller Max produces significantly more light than the compact 8-watt ShadeDweller 7% UVB lamp.

As a result, despite its lower UVB percentage, the ShadeDweller Max can achieve a comparable UV index when placed at the appropriate distance.

Therefore, the UVB percentage alone does not determine how intense the UV radiation actually is that the reptile receives.

Wide UV range thanks to the longer T5 lamp

A key advantage of the Arcadia ShadeDweller Max is its length of approximately 55 centimeters.

While the compact ShadeDweller 7% UVB lamp is particularly well-suited for a smaller UV zone, the ShadeDweller Max spreads the light over a larger area.

This is especially useful for snakes and other reptiles with longer bodies.

When a snake is partially lying under a compact UVB lamp, only a small portion of its body is directly exposed to the light.

With the longer ShadeDweller Max, you can create a wider UV zone in which a larger portion of the body can be exposed to appropriate UV radiation.

This makes the lamp a good choice for medium-sized and larger terrariums.

12% UVA for more natural light

In addition to UVB, the Arcadia ShadeDweller Max also produces UVA radiation.

UVA is a component of natural sunlight and can be detected by many reptiles.

In various reptile species, UVA plays a role in their perception of their environment and in their natural behavior.

The ShadeDweller Max emits approximately 12% UVA and provides bright, daylight-like light.

This makes the lamp suitable for use as part of a natural lighting system.

For additional visible light or to promote plant growth, the UVB lamp can be combined with a compatible Arcadia JungleDawn LED Bar.

Designed for a natural light and shade system

The Arcadia ShadeDweller series is based on the principle that reptiles should be able to regulate their own exposure to UV radiation.

In nature, many animals move between light and dark areas.

Some reptiles bask fully in the sun, while other species are only partially exposed to sunlight from a shelter.

With the ShadeDweller Max, you can recreate these conditions in a terrarium.

Place the lamp above a suitable UV area and make sure the animal can also completely avoid the UV radiation.

For example, use cork bark, plants, branches, and other decorations to create sheltered spots.

This creates a natural UV gradient that allows the reptile to determine for itself how much UV radiation it receives.

UV Index and Mounting Distance

With UVB lighting, the UV index is more important than just the stated UVB percentage.

The UV index provides an indication of the amount of biologically effective UV radiation measured at a specific location.

Arcadia publishes the following indicative UV index values for the ShadeDweller Max when used with the corresponding ProT5 setup.

Distance to the lampEstimated UV index
25 cm1.40
30 cm1.00
37.5 cm0.80
45 cm0.50
55 cm0.30
60 cm0.20

These values were measured without a mesh between the lamp and the measurement point.

A metal mesh cover can significantly reduce the UV index. The reflector used and the age of the lamp also affect the actual UVB output.

Therefore, it is best to use a suitable UV meter to check the UV index at the animal’s living area.

High-quality German T5 lamp technology

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 Lamp 14 Watt is manufactured using high-quality German lamp technology.

The lamp uses a T5 fluorescent tube with a diameter of 16 millimeters.

Thanks to its efficient technology, the lamp produces a broad light spectrum while consuming only 14 watts.

The ShadeDweller Max is designed to provide reliable UVB output throughout its recommended service life.

Arcadia recommends replacing the lamp after approximately twelve months.

Even if the lamp still produces visible light, UVB output may decrease over time.

Suitable as a replacement lamp for the ShadeDweller Max Pro T5

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 14-watt lamp is the individual replacement lamp for the corresponding ShadeDweller Max Pro T5 Kit.

So when the existing UVB lamp needs to be replaced, you don’t have to buy a whole new lighting kit.

You simply replace the T5 lamp in the existing fixture.

The lamp is suitable for compatible 14-watt T5 fixtures with the correct length and electrical specifications.

Always check whether the existing fixture is compatible with this specific T5 lamp.

The lamp is supplied without a reflector, power cord, or fixture.

Difference between ShadeDweller 7% and ShadeDweller Max 2.5%

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 14-watt lamps are designed for similar applications but differ in length, wattage, and light output.

FeatureShadeDweller 7%ShadeDweller Max 2.5%
UVB7%2.5%
UVA17%Approximately 12%
Power8 watts14 watts
Fluorescent tube length30 cm55 cm
Light DistributionCompact UV zoneWider UV zone
ApplicationSmaller terrariumsMedium and larger terrariums
Replacement BulbYesYes

The ShadeDweller Max has a lower UVB percentage, but produces significantly more light over a larger area.

As a result, at an appropriate distance, the UV index can be comparable to that of the compact ShadeDweller 7% model.

The choice between the two lamps therefore depends not only on the UVB percentage, but primarily on the terrarium dimensions, the species being kept, and the desired UV zone.

Combine with appropriate heat and daylight lighting

The Arcadia ShadeDweller Max 2.5% UVB T5 Lamp, 14 watts, emits UVB, UVA, and visible light, but it is not a heat lamp.

For reptiles that need a warm basking spot, UVB lighting must therefore be combined with a suitable heat source.

Depending on the species, this could be, for example, a halogen basking lamp or another suitable terrarium heat lamp.

For tropical and bioactive terrariums, supplemental LED daylight lighting may be worth considering.

A suitable JungleDawn LED bar provides additional visible light and can support the growth of terrarium plants.

By carefully balancing UVB, heat, and daylight, you can create a more natural living environment in which reptiles can regulate their behavior and body temperature.
