Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB for Reptiles
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB is a compact UVB lamp specially designed for reptiles with a relatively high need for ultraviolet light. This UVB energy-saving lamp is part of Arcadia’s D3+ Desert series and combines 12% UVB radiation with 30% UVA and bright, full-spectrum daylight.
Many reptiles from deserts, steppes, and other open habitats are exposed to intense sunlight in the wild. In addition to visible light and heat, they also receive ultraviolet radiation, which is important for various bodily functions.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp helps create a suitable UV zone in the terrarium. Thanks to its compact design, this lamp is particularly well-suited for smaller terrariums, localized UVB lighting, and enclosures where a traditional linear UVB tube is less practical.
The lamp is equipped with a standard E27 screw base and built-in ballast. This eliminates the need for a separate ballast.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB is available in 13- and 23-watt versions.
12% UVB supports vitamin D3 and calcium metabolism
The most important feature of the Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp is its high UVB content of 12%.
UVB radiation plays an important role in the natural production of vitamin D3 in the skin of many reptiles. Vitamin D3 is essential for the proper absorption and utilization of calcium.
Among other things, calcium supports the development and maintenance of strong bones, muscle function, and various normal bodily processes.
When reptiles do not receive enough appropriate UVB radiation, this can contribute to impaired calcium metabolism. In severe cases, this can lead to metabolic bone disease.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB provides a source of UVB radiation that allows you to create a suitable UV zone for reptiles that require this type of radiation.
However, the UVB percentage listed on the packaging is not the same as the UV index that the animal actually receives. The actual exposure depends on the distance, the reflector, the mounting angle, and any shielding.
Designed for reptiles that inhabit deserts and steppes
The Arcadia D3+ Desert series is designed for reptiles that naturally live in areas with plenty of direct sunlight.
Consider, for example, certain agamas, diurnal lizards, and tortoises. This lamp may also be suitable for other reptiles with higher UV requirements, provided that exposure is carefully adjusted.
In the wild, these animals regularly seek out sunny spots, but they can also retreat under rocks, into burrows, or into the shade.
A well-designed terrarium must therefore not only provide sufficient UVB, but also have low-UV zones where the animal can avoid the radiation.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp allows you to create a localized UV zone. For larger animals and longer terrariums, a linear T5 UVB system is often more suitable because of its wider distribution of UV radiation.
30% UVA for natural behavior and color perception
In addition to UVB, the Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp produces 30% UVA radiation.
Many reptiles can perceive UVA as part of their visual spectrum. As a result, UVA may contribute to natural color perception and behavior.
For example, it may play a role in recognizing other members of the same species, food, and elements in the environment.
By combining UVA and UVB with visible daylight, the Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp is a valuable addition to a balanced lighting system.
Always make sure that reptiles can choose for themselves between brighter and more shaded areas of the terrarium.
Bright daylight at 8200 Kelvin
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp produces bright daylight with a color temperature of 8200 Kelvin.
This relatively cool light color gives the terrarium a fresh, bright look and complements the powerful daylight lighting for which the D3+ Desert series was developed.
The lamp has a color rendering index (CRI) of over 90. This ensures that the colors of reptiles, plants, and decorative materials are rendered true to life.
This is helpful when observing animals and helps keep the terrarium well-lit.
Additional daylight lighting may be necessary to create a fully balanced lighting environment. This is especially true for larger enclosures and terrariums with live plants.
Improved electronics and high-quality German phosphors
Arcadia has developed the D3+ Compact Lamp using modern fluorescent technology and high-quality phosphors manufactured in Germany.
The lamp features improved electronics, an updated light spectrum, and special glass that helps block unwanted UVC radiation.
According to Arcadia, the lamp is flicker-free and designed to provide stable UV output throughout its recommended service life.
The improved UV projection ensures that the available UV radiation is effectively emitted from the compact light source.
Thanks to the integrated ballast technology, the lamp can be used directly in a suitable E27 lamp holder, without an external ballast.
Available in 13- and 23-watt versions
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB is available in two versions. Both produce 12% UVB and 30% UVA, but differ in wattage and visible light output.
| Feature | 13 watts | 23 watts |
|---|---|---|
| UVB content | 12% | 12% |
| UVA content | 30% | 30% |
| Color Temperature | 8200 K | 8200 K |
| Light output | 270 lumens | 416 lumens |
| Color Rendering | CRI >90 | CRI >90 |
| Socket | E27 | E27 |
| Manufacturer Code | RFD3PC13X | RFD3PC23X |
The 13W model is a good choice for compact setups where a localized UVB zone is desired.
The 23W version provides more visible light and, depending on the mounting distance and reflector, can offer a different UV distribution.
A higher wattage does not automatically mean that the bulb is more suitable for every species. The right choice should be based on the required UV index for the animal’s environment.
Difference between Arcadia D3 7% and D3+ 12% UVB
Arcadia offers two compact UVB lamps, each designed for different lighting conditions.
The Arcadia D3 Compact Lamp 7% UVB is part of the Forest series and is designed for reptiles from forested habitats.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB is part of the Desert series and is intended for reptiles with higher UV requirements.
| Feature | D3 Compact 7% UVB | D3+ Compact 12% UVB |
|---|---|---|
| Product Line | Forest | Desert |
| UVB | 7% | 12% |
| UVA | 30% | 30% |
| Color temperature | 6500 K | 8,200 K |
| Wattages | 13 and 23 W | 13 and 23 W |
| Socket | E27 | E27 |
| Recommended replacement | 12 months | 12 months |
Choosing the right UVB lamp doesn’t depend solely on the habitat. The species, the mounting distance, and the available shaded areas are also important factors.
Compact UVB lamp or Arcadia Pro T5 UVB?
A compact UVB lamp has a different light distribution than a linear T5 UVB tube.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp emits UV radiation from a relatively small light source. This allows you to create a localized UV zone.
An Arcadia Pro T5 UVB system emits UV radiation over a longer distance and is therefore often more suitable for larger terrariums or reptiles that require a wider UV zone.
For larger reptiles, such as adult bearded dragons, a properly positioned linear UVB system is generally a better basic setup than a single compact UVB lamp.
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp, on the other hand, can be a practical solution for smaller enclosures or specific applications where a compact UV source is desired.
E27 socket without external ballast
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp features a standard E27 screw base.
The electronic ballast technology is integrated into the lamp. This eliminates the need for a separate ballast.
Use the bulb in a suitable E27 socket or reflector fixture designed for compact fluorescent bulbs.
A suitable reflector can help direct the available light and UV radiation to the desired location.
Do not place the lamp behind ordinary glass or plastic that blocks UVB radiation.
Up to 12 months of effective UVB output
Arcadia specifies a recommended replacement interval of 12 months for the D3+ Compact Lamp.
During this period, the lamp is designed to maintain a usable level of UV output when used correctly.
Please note that the UVB output of fluorescent lamps may decrease over time, even when the lamp is still producing visible light.
So a lit lamp does not automatically emit enough UVB.
Check the UV index, preferably with a suitable UV meter, and replace the lamp when the readings become insufficient. In any case, follow the manufacturer’s replacement recommendations.
Combining UVB lighting with a heat lamp
The Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp is designed for UVB, UVA, and daylight illumination. It is not a full-fledged heat source for a basking spot.
Many reptiles native to deserts and steppes need not only UVB but also a suitable heat lamp to regulate their body temperature.
For this purpose, you can use, for example, an Arcadia Solar Basking Floodlight or Halogen Basking Spot.
By carefully coordinating the UVB zone and the basking spot, the reptile can benefit from both heat and UV radiation while basking.
Also, make sure there are enough cooler areas in the terrarium with low UV levels.

Instructions for use
Mount the Arcadia D3+ Compact Lamp 12% UVB in a suitable E27 lamp holder or reflector fixture for compact fluorescent lamps.
Arcadia recommends a safe distance of at least 20 centimeters between the lamp and the reptile. This is not a universal ideal operating distance: the actual UV index must be tailored to the needs of the specific species being kept.
Ideally, measure the UV index using a suitable UV meter at the location where the animal is located. Take into account the effects of reflectors, the angle of installation, and any shielding.
Do not place the lamp behind ordinary glass or plastic that blocks UVB radiation. Make sure the reptile cannot touch the lamp directly.
Set up the terrarium so that the animal can use both the UV zone and the shaded areas with low UV levels.
Use the lamp during the day and turn it off during the nighttime rest period.
Combine the UVB lamp with a suitable heat source if the species you are keeping requires a warm basking spot.
Replace the lamp after twelve months, as recommended by Arcadia, or sooner if UV measurements indicate that the output is insufficient.
