This makes the heating mat suitable for various snakes, geckos, and invertebrates. Examples include corn snakes, royal pythons, leopard geckos, African house snakes, and certain tarantulas and scorpions. Always check in advance whether floor, wall, or background heat is suitable for the specific species and the enclosure being used.

For diurnal desert and steppe animals, such as bearded dragons and uromastyx, a heating mat is generally not sufficient as the primary heat source. These animals usually require a clearly defined basking area with more intense heat and appropriate lighting. However, in suitable situations, the mat can be used as supplemental or nighttime background heating.

Installation under, next to, or above the animal enclosure

Depending on the type of enclosure and the animal’s needs, the mat can be placed against the floor, wall, or ceiling. Always follow the included installation instructions. The correct placement varies depending on whether you have a glass terrarium, a plastic enclosure, a wooden vivarium, or a temporary quarantine tank.

Take the substrate into account. A thick, insulating layer of substrate can trap heat, limit heat transfer, or cause localized overheating. HabiStat recommends using a layer less than one centimeter thick when placing the mat under the substrate. Also, make sure there is sufficient ventilation and clearance around an externally placed mat.

The mat must not be folded, punctured, cut, or covered with insulating material. Never allow the animal to come into direct contact with the electrical connection or cable.

Test and check the complete heating setup for at least 48 hours before placing an animal in the enclosure.

Measure both the warm and cool zones and check the readings at different times of the day. Never operate a newly installed heating system without first checking it. Inspect the mat, cable, and connection regularly, and stop using the system immediately if you notice any damage.
