The HabiStat Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat is a precise terrarium thermostat for incandescent heat lamps and deep heat projectors. Instead of completely turning the connected heater on and off, the thermostat gradually adjusts the power output. This helps maintain a more stable temperature and prevents basking lamps from visibly flickering.
HabiStat Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat for Heat Lamps
Reptiles and other terrarium animals rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. Connecting a heat lamp without a thermostat can lead to excessively high temperatures, especially when the room temperature rises or ventilation changes. A thermostat continuously measures the temperature at the sensor and adjusts the heat source to maintain the set temperature as closely as possible.
The Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat provides a variable, continuous power supply. If the terrarium is too cold, the heat source receives more power. As the set temperature is approached, the thermostat gradually reduces the power. This makes it particularly well-suited as a thermostat for a heat lamp, basking lamp, or deep heat projector.
This feature prevents a light from constantly turning on and off completely. As a result, the light transitions are smoother, and unnecessary strain on the bulb is minimized. With a maximum connected load of 450 watts, the thermostat is suitable for a wide variety of terrarium setups.
Why use a dimming thermostat in a terrarium?
A thermostat helps prevent overheating and makes it easier to control the temperature. This is important for bearded dragons, leopard geckos, snakes, tortoises, and other animals that require carefully designed hot and cool zones.
The thermostat only regulates the temperature at the location of its sensor. As a result, the entire terrarium does not automatically reach the same temperature. Place the sensor in the appropriate warm zone and also monitor the basking spot and the cooler side with separate thermometers. An infrared thermometer is a useful addition for measuring surface temperatures.
Furthermore, a thermostat does not determine the temperature your pet needs. Always consult the care guidelines for the specific species and take into account the pet’s age, living environment, ventilation, and chosen heat source.
Select Dimming, Mat Stat, or Pulse Proportional
Within the HabiStat Classic Pro series, each thermostat uses a different control method:
| Model | Control Method | Suitable heat sources |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Pro Dimming | Smoothly increase and decrease power | Heat lamps, basking lamps, and deep heat projectors |
| Classic Pro Mat | Turn on and off completely | Heating mats and heating cables |
| Classic Pro Pulse | Rapid current pulses | Ceramic radiant heaters and heating cables |
Choose the Dimming model if you want to control a light-emitting heat source or a deep heat projector. A Mat or Pulse thermostat can cause a lamp to visibly flicker, which may shorten its lifespan. HabiStat also does not recommend the Pulse model for deep heat projectors.
LCD screen, removable sensor, and safety alarms
The LCD screen on the HabiStat Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat displays both the current and set temperatures. The control range is from 0 to 50 °C. The detachable sensor makes installation and replacement easier.
The thermostat features an adjustable alarm for temperatures that are too high or too low. By default, the system alerts you when the temperature exceeds the set point by more than 5 °C in either direction. This tolerance can be adjusted from 1 to 5 °C. If necessary, the sensor reading can also be calibrated up or down by up to 5 °C.
After a power outage, the device automatically restores the previously set values. The built-in ultra-fast fuse helps protect the electronics if a connected heat source malfunctions or causes a short circuit.

Instructions for use
Place the HabiStat Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat in a dry, well-ventilated environment. Guide the sensor to the relevant measurement location in the terrarium and secure it firmly so that the animal cannot move it. Do not immerse the sensor in water. Then connect the heat source to the thermostat and never exceed the maximum power of 450 watts.
Test the entire setup before placing the animal in the enclosure. Allow the temperature to stabilize, and monitor both the warm zone and the cool side for at least one full day. Keep an eye on the display and use a separate digital and infrared thermometer to verify the readings.
