Arcadia D3+ Desert T5 Lamp for sun-loving reptiles

UVB plays an important role in the natural production of vitamin D3 in many reptiles. Vitamin D3, in turn, supports the absorption of calcium from the diet. With appropriate UVB lighting, you can replicate an essential component of natural sunlight that is barely available through ordinary glass.

The Desert lamp was developed for reptiles from open, sunny habitats. Examples include bearded dragons, uromastyx, blue-tongued skinks, various agamas, tortoises, and other diurnal lizards. A 12% UVB lamp may also be suitable for some species from transitional habitats, depending on their behavior and the distance between the lamp and the basking spot.

UVA light contributes to the way reptiles perceive their environment, other reptiles, and food. The bright daylight also creates a natural-looking terrarium in which the colors of the animal and the decor are clearly visible.

A wide UVB zone above the basking spot

An elongated T5 lamp spreads light and UVB over a wider area than a compact UVB lamp. This allows a larger portion of the body to be evenly exposed to light while basking. This is especially valuable for medium-sized and larger reptiles.

Ideally, place the Arcadia D3+ Desert T5 Lamp above the same area as the heat lamp. This way, light, UVB, and heat combine to form a recognizable basking area. Do not direct the system over the entire enclosure; leave some shaded areas available as well. This allows the animal to choose between different light levels on its own.

A good reflector helps direct UVB radiation downward. When installed above a mesh terrarium roof, some of the UVB output may be blocked by the mesh. Keep this in mind when determining the mounting distance.

The difference between 12% Desert and 14% Dragon

The D3+ Desert lamp produces 12% UVB and is the most versatile choice for many sun-loving reptiles. The lamp is well-suited to terrariums of average height and a standard distance between the lighting and the basking spot.

The D3+ Dragon bulb emits 14% UVB and is designed for situations where a higher UVB output is required. Examples include tall terrariums, a greater mounting distance, or species with particularly high sunlight requirements. The more powerful Dragon version is therefore not automatically better; the right lamp depends on the species and setup.

The actual UV index is determined by a combination of lamp type, reflector, distance, mesh, and operating time. A UVB meter provides the most accurate way to monitor the intensity at animal height.

Choose the right length and wattage

The 24-watt version fits into a compatible HO T5 fixture designed for lamps approximately 56 cm long. This size is suitable for small and medium-sized terrariums. The 39-watt, 86.5-cm version creates a longer UVB zone for medium to large enclosures.

The 54-watt version is 117 cm long and is intended for wide terrariums where a large basking area needs to be illuminated. The wattage and length go hand in hand and are not separate choices. A T5 lamp must always match the specifications of the fixture.
