The HabiStat Classic Pro Pulse Proportional Thermostat is a precise terrarium thermostat designed for non-luminous heat sources, such as ceramic heat lamps and heating cables. Instead of constantly turning the heater completely on and off, this proportional thermostat sends rapid current pulses to the heat source. The pulse frequency is adjusted to maintain the set temperature at a stable level.
HabiStat Classic Pro Pulse Proportional Thermostat for stable heat
Reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates rely heavily on the climate in their enclosure to maintain their body temperature. A ceramic heat lamp that is plugged directly into an outlet continues to heat at full power at all times. As a result, the temperature can rise uncontrollably when, for example, the room temperature changes.
The Pulse Proportional Thermostat measures the temperature using the detachable sensor. When a lot of heat is needed, it sends power pulses to the connected heater more frequently. As the set temperature is approached, the number of pulses decreases. This allows the heating output to be finely tuned to the current heat demand.
This control method generally results in smaller temperature variations than a simple on-off thermostat. This makes the pulse thermostat suitable for setups in which a ceramic radiant heater provides constant, lightless background heat.
Thermostat for a ceramic radiator
A ceramic radiant heater produces heat without visible light and can therefore be used both during the day and at night, provided this suits the animal’s temperature requirements. The HabiStat Pulse Proportional Thermostat controls such a heat source without long switching phases between hot and cold.
This can be practical for snakes such as corn snakes and royal pythons, as well as for geckos and other animals that depend on a controlled warm zone. However, the appropriate heating varies by species. Diurnal desert animals, such as bearded dragons, generally also need a clearly defined basking area with appropriate lighting and heat from above.
Heating cables can also be controlled with this thermostat. Always make sure that the heated area covers only part of the enclosure. This ensures that, in addition to the warm zone, there is a cooler area available where the animal can move on its own.
Difference Between Pulse, Dimming, and Mat Stat
The three HabiStat Classic Pro thermostats look similar, but use different control methods. Therefore, always choose the model based on the connected heat source.
| Model | Control Engineering | Recommended Heat Source |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Pro Pulse Proportional | Fast current pulses | Ceramic radiant heater and heating cable |
| Classic Pro Dimming | Smoothly adjust power | Heat lamp, basking lamp, and deep heat projector |
| Classic Pro Mat Stat | Full On/Off Control | Heating mat and heating cable |
The Pulse Proportional model is not suitable for luminous heat lamps. The rapid current pulses would cause the lamp to flicker visibly and could lead to premature wear. Do not use this model with a deep heat projector either. For both heat sources, HabiStat recommends the Classic Pro Dimming Thermostat.
For a simple heating mat, the Classic Pro Mat Stat is generally the more logical and cost-effective choice. The Pulse version is particularly well-suited for ceramic radiant heaters and other compatible non-luminous heating systems where stable control is desired.
LCD display, detachable sensor, and alarm function
The LCD display shows the current and set temperatures. The control range is from 0 to 50 °C, and the maximum connected load is 450 watts. The detachable sensor makes it easier to install and maintain the thermostat.
The high- and low-temperature alarm alerts you when the temperature deviates too far from the set point. The default alarm threshold is 5 °C and can be adjusted from 1 to 5 °C. If a thermometer shows a systematic measurement deviation, the sensor reading can be calibrated up or down by up to 5 °C.
After a power outage, the thermostat automatically restores the previously set values. A high-speed fuse helps protect the internal electronics from malfunctions caused by the connected heat source.

Manual
Place the HabiStat Classic Pro Pulse Proportional Thermostat in a dry, well-ventilated area and secure the sensor firmly within the relevant heating zone. Prevent the animal from moving, covering, or lying on the sensor. Do not submerge the sensor in water, and do not exceed the maximum power rating of 450 watts.
Test the heating setup before placing the animal in the enclosure. Check both the warm and cool zones for at least one full day.
