Pyrrosia nummularifolia as an epiphytic fern for the terrarium
Caring for This Terrarium Fern
Pyrrosia nummularifolia is a compact fern with round, leathery fronds and a creeping rhizome. It is often chosen for terrariums because it is an epiphytic fern that likes to attach itself to cork, wood, or a back wall. This creates a natural, tranquil “overgrown” effect without the plant taking up much space or quickly becoming cluttered. The fronds generally remain small and neat, making it a good fit for arrangements where you want to add detail and texture—for example, along branches, back walls, or higher parts of the hardscape.
Place Pyrrosia nummularifolia in bright, indirect light or partial shade and maintain a stable level of humidity. As an epiphytic fern, it thrives best when its rhizome is in contact with an airy, moisture-retaining base—such as a thin layer of moss on cork—rather than deep in wet substrate. Allow the surface to dry out slightly in between waterings, but prevent the plant from drying out for extended periods. With regular light misting and adequate ventilation, the fronds remain healthy and growth proceeds slowly and in a controlled manner—which is usually exactly the goal in a terrarium.
