Ranitomeya alto cainarachi as a poison dart frog for the vivarium
Caring for This Poison Dart Frog
Ranitomeya alto cainarachi is a compact poison dart frog belonging to the “thumbnail dart frogs” group: small in size, diurnal, and best observed in a densely planted, humid vivarium. Ranitomeya species naturally inhabit wet tropical rainforests in South America, where they dwell among leaf litter and low vegetation, as well as higher up in the canopy. The name “Alto Cainarachi” refers to a region of origin that is frequently cited in the literature and among hobbyists as a location designation.
For Ranitomeya alto cainarachi, success hinges primarily on stability: a consistently humid environment with good ventilation, plenty of micro-shelters (leaf litter, twigs, bromeliad-like structures), and clean water that isn’t too deep. The diet for a poison dart frog of this size consists primarily of very small prey items, particularly (wingless) fruit flies and springtails; variety can be added with other micro-prey. Due to their small size, a stable environment in the enclosure is important: it’s better to have a mature, well-established bioactive system than to make major changes frequently.
